General Overview
Name: Rhodesian Ridgeback
Origin: South Africa, Simbabwe
Original purpose of breed: Lion hunting, farm protection
Purpose of breed today: guarding, hunting, rescue and therapy dog, family pet
Standard Size males: 63 - 69 cm
Standard Size females: 61 - 66 cm
Color: wheaten, red-wheaten, dark wheaten
white patches are allowed (less than 5% of the coat)
black "mask" is typical
black nose and brown nose (Livernose)
Special Feature: The ridge on their back (hair grows the
opposite direction)
Character: intelligent, proud, fearless, gentle, non aggressive,
protective, loyal, lazy but athletic and playful,
reserved towards strangers, very sensitive
